Digital transformation is reshaping guest experiences and operational efficiencies at Radisson Hotel Group. In this interview with Raul Alvarez Barrera, Global VP of Digital, we explore their journey, the impact of visual content, and the strategic use of data.
“Radisson Hotel Group is recognised for its Digital vision. Our forward-thinking digital strategy, especially our Radisson Hotels App, immersive experiences, and localisation strategy, is highly recognised by industry leaders and organisations.” Raul Alvarez Barrera
Radisson’s digital transformation journey unfolded in distinct phases and is still ongoing. This is an always-evolving exercise in our Digital Experience Center of Excellence DNA.
In the first phase, we embarked on a strategic consolidation, migrating ten separate brand websites into a single, unified platform. This streamlined presence established a strong foundation in the competitive digital landscape, generating operational excellence and content efficiency.

Following this, we focused on enriching the customer experience and maximising conversions. Localisation, personalisation, and immersive experiences were key components in this phase. Developing a robust mobile app, a revamped loyalty program, and a review of online pricing strategies (member-only and app-only rates, for example) marked a significant milestone in our digital transformation.
What role did visual content management play in your digital transformation efforts, and what measurable impacts did it have on customer engagement and direct bookings?
Visual content management played a central role in our digital transformation efforts, leading to a measurable increase in customer engagement and direct bookings.
One of the key cores of our digital transformation was to recognize the power of visual assets throughout the customer journey. Compelling visuals entice potential guests and move them down the booking funnel. Images, videos, and more interactive visual assets help us showcasing the unique selling points (USPs) of each of our hotels (a resort is totally different than an airport hotel for example) and help us respond to specific needs and buying intentions of different guest segments.
Could you provide examples of the types of visual content that proved most effective in driving direct revenue, and how did you ensure this content was consistently high-quality and relevant across various digital platforms?
Understanding our audience is key to crafting visual content that drives direct revenue. We actively test and refine our approach to cater to different guest segments which proved to be successful for Radisson:
- Traditionalists / Boomers: High-quality photos and videos showcasing the hotel’s amenities, facilities, and surroundings resonate strongly with this group.
- Adventurer / Millennial: We push boundaries here with interactive content like 360-degree tours and virtual reality experiences, allowing them to virtually explore the hotel before booking.
- Explorer Gen X: This segment appreciates new ideas alongside practicality. We provide a mix of engaging videos and informative 360 tours, offering a taste of the immersive experience while maintaining a user-friendly format.
- Trailblazers / Gen Z: We cater to their desire for novelty with cutting-edge content like interaction with our app (gyroscope for example) and AI features.
Ensuring consistent high-quality visuals across platforms is crucial. Here’s how we achieve this:
- 360 Content Audit: We conduct a thorough audit of our visual assets, and constantly replace outdated images with fresh, high-quality content. Furthermore, we embrace new visual content formats like videos, 360-degree tours, and immersive experiences.
- Content Style Guide: We developed a comprehensive style guide to be followed by all our properties.
- Centralized Asset Management: We maintain a central repository for all approved visual assets, ensuring easy access and consistent use across departments.
- Scalable Content Creation: We invest in creating adaptable content formats that can be easily resized and optimized for different platforms, including media activities.
By tailoring visual content to each audience segment and maintaining consistency across platforms, we create a compelling and engaging online experience that drives direct bookings.
How did you integrate improved visual content management with your existing digital marketing and communication channels to maximise its impact on direct revenue?
We’ve implemented a multi-pronged approach to integrate improved visual content management with our existing digital marketing and communication channels, maximizing its impact on direct revenue.
Here’s how:
- Strategic Content Distribution: We identified key areas on our website where user-generated and high-quality visual content can add significant value. This includes property pages, brand corners, destination pages, “new and upcoming” hotels, blog, and merchandising landing pages. By strategically placing visuals in these areas, we ensure potential guests encounter compelling content throughout their online journey.
- Leveraging Field Activator Content: We defined a clear strategy for integrating lifestyle content produced by Field Activators (employees who represent our brand). This valuable and curated content helps showcase real-life experiences and injects authenticity into our brand story. This approach presents our hotels “in motion” with real people enjoying our spaces and destinations. These lifestyle visuals create a more engaging and aspirational experience, ultimately driving bookings.
- User-Generated Content Integration (UGC Pilot): We’re piloting the use of UGC across our website to further enhance guest engagement. This allows potential customers to see authentic experiences from real guests, fostering trust and connection with our brand.
By strategically placing high-quality and user-generated content across various digital touchpoints, we create a cohesive and compelling online experience that fosters engagement and ultimately leads to direct bookings. This focus on visual content integration is an ongoing process, with pilots like UGC and lifestyle image strategies continuously being refined to maximize their impact.
How has mastering data influenced your strategic decisions in leading digital efforts at Radisson Hotels, and can you provide examples of how data has driven significant improvements?
Mastering data is fundamental to our strategic decision-making in leading Radisson’ digital efforts. Data empowers us to personalize the guest experience, optimize marketing spend, and ultimately drive significant improvements in our digital channels.
Here are some specific examples of how data has been instrumental:
- Data-Driven Localization: We leverage user data to determine which languages content should be translated into. By analyzing the browser language preference of users interested in specific hotels, we prioritize translations with the highest potential return on investment (ROI) in terms of acquired bookings. This ensures our content resonates with the most relevant audience.
- Boosting Web and App Conversions and App Downloads: Data helps us navigate potential tactics to increase web and app conversions and app downloads. We analyze our customer journeys from booking intention, pre-stay, in-stay, and post-stay to determine which specific action to push in each of these moments results in better customer engagement/satisfaction and revenue generation. This data-driven approach ensures we’re optimizing for long-term customer engagement across all touchpoints.
- Personalized Guest Experiences: We leverage data on feeder markets and seasonal demand to tailor our geo-targeting efforts. By understanding user demographics and preferences, we can ensure the “right product” is presented to the “right audience” at the “right moment.” This personalization approach leads to increased relevance and ultimately drives bookings.
These are just a few examples of how data empowers our digital strategy at Radisson, in reality, there are so many layers. Any of my colleagues could add a piece in the puzzle because data is truly fundamental in our organization.
What customer-centric digital initiatives have you implemented at Radisson Hotels that have significantly enhanced guest satisfaction and loyalty?

At Radisson Hotel Group, we’ve implemented several customer-centric digital initiatives that have significantly enhanced guest satisfaction and loyalty. Four key initiatives stand out:
- The Radisson Hotels App: Our award-winning app goes beyond simple booking. It allows guests to manage reservations, access exclusive member benefits and special offers, and enjoy a more seamless hotel experience. This convenience and value proposition contribute to revenue growth while fostering loyalty among app users.
- Localization Strategy: We understand the importance of catering to diverse guest preferences. Our comprehensive localization strategy ensures our digital presence is available in 32 languages, personalized for over 60 regions. This creates a welcoming and relevant online experience for global travelers, driving satisfaction and loyalty across new and existing markets.
- Meetings & Events Digital Assets: Recognizing the importance of the B2B segment, we’ve invested in dedicated digital assets for Meetings & Events. This allows planners to easily access information, request proposals, and manage bookings online. This streamlined B2B experience fosters stronger relationships with corporate clients and event organizers.
- Immersive Experience Strategy: We’re constantly innovating to meet evolving guest expectations. Our groundbreaking Immersive Experience strategy allows potential guests to virtually explore our hotels using 3D tours, VR experiences, and interactive floor plans offering our guests the ability to select their exact room. This empowers guests to make informed booking decisions and builds excitement for their stay, ultimately enhancing overall satisfaction.
By prioritizing these customer-centric initiatives, we’re creating a more convenient, personalized, and engaging digital experience for our guests. This, in turn, translates to increased guest satisfaction, loyalty, and ultimately, repeat business for Radisson Hotel Group. With this focus on guest experience, we aim to make our website and app the go-to channel for booking Radisson Hotels, surpassing third-party online booking channels in 2026.
How is Radisson leveraging digital channels to enhance customer engagement before, during, and after their stays? Can you provide examples of successful digital marketing or communication campaigns?
The hotel industry has certainly been one of the slower adopters of digital customer experience transformation. However, in recent years, there’s been a surge in efforts to bridge the gap between online and offline services. At Radisson Hotel Group, we’re at the forefront of this movement with Radisson+, a dynamic way for our guests to manage their hotel stay to save time and make life easy while creating truly memorable moments.
Radisson+ creates a smooth and seamless experience throughout the whole customer journey. It starts before guests even arrive at the hotel with simple online check-in. Instant messaging and AI chatbot respond to any hotel queries and requests, both pre-and during a stay. A digital key downloaded on the phone, allows the opening of the hotel door without spending time queueing at the reception. While at the hotel, the guest can interact with our digital access point to request food, get information about the hotel facilities and the activities around the hotel location. Radisson+ is designed to help with whatever enhances our guests’ stay, in their way…
What emerging digital trends do you foresee having the most impact on the hospitality industry, and how is Radisson Hotels preparing to leverage these trends?
Very often, we see exciting digital projects launched by little start-ups or competitors. We love it and this pushes us to experiment and investigate if these digital trends are beneficial for our company.
Let me share what I think have a significant potential. The first is Artificial Intelligence (AI) Beyond Automation: We recognize AI’s vast potential beyond just operational efficiency or product recommendations. We’re exploring how AI can personalize guest experiences, anticipate needs, and provide real-time support. This could involve AI-powered chatbots that handle guest inquiries with a human touch, or AI-driven recommendations for activities and staying options tailored to individual preferences.
Complimentary to that, I would say Authentic User-Generated Content (UGC): Understanding the desire for genuine guest experiences, we’re placing a strong emphasis on UGC. We’ve established larger “Content Field Activator” teams in local markets. These teams are dedicated to capturing authentic guest moments and showcasing them across our digital platforms. This focus on real-life experiences fosters trust and connection with potential guests, ultimately driving bookings.
What key performance indicators (KPIs) have you established to measure the success of digital transformation initiatives at Radisson Hotels, and what tools and technologies do you use to track and analyse these KPIs?
At Radisson Hotels, we leverage a comprehensive suite of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure the success of our digital transformation initiatives. This approach allows us to gain a holistic understanding of our efforts’ impact across various digital touchpoints.
Our KPI framework combines several key areas:
- Business KPIs: We track metrics directly tied to business growth, such as the direct share contribution (bookings made directly through our website or app) to the company’s revenue.
- Web & App Performance KPIs: We monitor key website and app performance indicators like conversion rate (percentage of visitors who complete a desired action, like booking a stay) to understand the effectiveness of these channels in driving conversions.
- Engagement KPIs: Beyond conversions, we also track engagement metrics like bounce rate (percentage of visitors who leave after viewing a single page), scroll rate (how far down a page visitors typically scroll), and error rate (frequency of technical issues encountered). These KPIs provide insights into user experience and opportunities for improvement.
To track and analyze these KPIs, we utilize a robust combination of tools and technologies. Business Intelligence (BI) tools provide us with a comprehensive view of business metrics, allowing us to track trends and measure the impact of digital initiatives on overall company performance. Digital Experience Analytics (DXA) tools, like Quantum Metric for example, to gain detailed insights into every customer journey across our digital channels. This allows for granular analysis of user behaviour and identification of areas for improvement in the user experience. And last but very important, Customer Satisfaction surveys. We prioritize listening to our customers’ voices. We conduct online satisfaction surveys, capturing feedback through a measurable rating system. Segmenting this data allows us to track changes in customer perception over time and identify areas where we can enhance the digital experience.
How are AI and automation utilised at Radisson Hotels to streamline operations and improve guest experiences? What future plans do you have for these technologies?
At Radisson Hotels, we’re leveraging AI and automation to streamline operations and enhance guest experiences. We’ve partnered with technology providers to automate the management of digital asset galleries for both our responsive website and app. This empowers hotel properties to directly control the order of visual content and update assets efficiently, saving time and resources.
We are also using AI to enhance the guest experience through AI-powered Localization. We’re pioneering the use of AI in our localization efforts. By integrating a large language model into our translation ecosystem, we recently launched Japanese and Korean language support on our website and app. This AI-assisted approach allows us to deliver efficient and cost-effective multilingual experiences for our global guests.
We’re committed to continuously exploring and implementing AI and automation solutions across our operations. We envision AI personalizing guest experiences by anticipating needs, providing targeted recommendations, and offering real-time support through AI-powered chatbots. We also envision that in the future AI can help up automating repetitive tasks like back-office operations and data analysis to free up staff time for guest interaction.
As we discussed previously, deciding which languages we offer online is one example of which type of content we offer to which segment.
Overseeing a Digital Experience Center of Excellence and responsible of topics that space from Digital Product Development to Content Marketing and Content Operations, I could give tens of examples. Since I previously mentioned Localization, I can add to that talking about translations. Very often, people mistakenly think that adding a language into a website (especially in the travel industry) is just a cost for a company. And normally I demonstrate with facts that is completely wrong.
With 33 languages, Radisson Hotel Group became the first hotel company worldwide in number of languages available on its reservation system. This increase in the number of languages extended the reach of the brand to a customer base of over 6 billion people in more than 180 countries. Data speak the same language as our guest matters and shows that the conversion rate in local languages is on average 37% higher, and up to 3 times higher in key markets like China. These numbers translate into real revenue on our online channels.

Raul explained how the company prioritizes data analysis, leverages new technologies like AI and automation, and adapts its strategy based on performance data. Content is linked to performance. It’s not all about data, though, hospitality means memorable moments and unique experiences. Every moment matters.
